Solar thermal and solar photovoltaic provide excellent forms of local renewable energy for some buildings in the UK, with biomass and wind also sustainable, but generally restricted to specific areas.

Low carbon systems, such as heat pumps (air and ground source), ground coupling and variable refrigerant (VRF/VRV) can be utilised in building design to lower energy consumption whilst providing excellent performance.

As part of sustainable building design, renewables and LZC technology should only be installed when losses and adverse solar gains have first been reduced.
